Health Tip of The Day

Keep a positive mental outlook, there's a definitive connection between living well and healthfully and having a cheerful outlook on life.

Bridging the gap between Women and Wellness

Thank You

by Kellie Kuecha

Well here it is, our first newsletter.  I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed putting it together.  I consider it quite a blessing that it has reached you as I accidentally deleted the first edition!

I would like to express my sincere thanks to all of you that have made the Women's Wellness Society such a huge success in such a short amount of time.

As many of you know, we got our start in May and launched our first meeting on June 14th at Maggiano's Little Italy in Boca Raton.  We had about 55 women in attendance eager to learn more about our mission and ready to take charge of their health.  The meeting was a huge success as Dr. Steven Silver lectured on Prevention for Today's Woman.  It was that night that Jill and I knew we had succeeded in accomplishing our mission of Bridging the gap between Women and Wellness.  Your letters, emails and phone calls have been so kind and we thank you all for taking the time to show us your gratitude.

Our second meeting was even more  successful as we had over 60 women in attendance, and were enlightened by Dr. Jane Groman as she lectured on hormones.  Boy did I need that one!

We know this organization is a special one by what we feel in our hearts but more importantly, by what our guests and members feel in their hearts.  There is a very large need in society today to get women healthier and on the correct path  to wellness.  The confusion that exists in today’s world of health and medicine, leaves most women in a quandary, not allowing them to be proactive towards their well being.

Our club aims to end that confusion, giving women support and friendship and empowering them with the education to make informed choices.

Thank you to my staff and volunteers who helped to make all of this possible, I could not have done it without you.  Thank you to our members and guests, and most of all thank you to the health professionals that are so generous in sharing their knowledge with us.

We look forward to seeing you all at an upcoming meeting in your area!  Enjoy your July!

"Lets Stop Poisoning Our Children"
Why Children are at Higher Risk
by Staci Smith

Pamphlet written by: Debra Lynn Dadd

Toxic chemicals in household products pose potential hazards to everyone. Children are at an even higher risk from exposures to toxics than adults because they have special vulnerabilities.

Children's Bodies are less developed...

Beginning at the fetal stage and continuing through adolescence, children are physiologically very different than adults. They are in a dynamic state of growth, with cells multiplying and organ systems developing at a rapid rate. At birth their nervous, respiratory, reproductive, and immune systems are far from fully developed.

Because metabolic systems are still developing in the fetus and child, their ability to detoxify and excrete toxins differs from that of adults. Generally they are not able to excrete toxins as well as adults, and thus are more vulnerable to them. Because a child's immune system is less developed, it cannot protect against toxic exposures as well as an adult is protected. For some toxins, children are missing important biochemical detoxifying mechanisms, which only develop later in life.

Developing cells in children's bodies are more susceptible to damage than adults that have completed development, especially for the central nervous system. During the development of a child, from conception through adolescence, there are particular windows of vulnerability to environmental hazards. Exposure at these moments can lead to permanent and irreversible damage. Even small doses of neurotoxins, which would be harmless in an adult, can alter a child's nervous system development.

Children take in more pollutants...

Children drink more water, eat more food, and breathe more air per pound of body weight than adults. Thus, their bodies are easily overwhelmed by levels of pollutants that are much higher than adult exposures, relative to body weight. The average infant's daily consumption of formula or breast

milk, for example, is equivalent to an adult drinking fifty eight-ounce glasses of milk a day. Growing children between one and five years old eat three to four times as much food per pound of body weight than an average adult, giving them greater exposure to pesticides and other contaminants in food.

Children put more foreign objects in their mouths...

Children put their hands and other objects in their mouths more often than adults do, and so transfer more foreign substances into their bodies. Because children are smaller, and often play in the dirt or on the floor, they are closer to pollutants that adults are even exposed to. Imagine crawling around on a floor that was just washed with toxic chemicals. Adults don't do this, but babies and children do.

This is particularly a problem in day care, where chlorine bleach is used to clean toys. On the one hand, it's a good idea to disinfect toys that children are putting in their mouths. On the other and, using a toxic chemical to do so poisons children if any residue remains.

Children absorb more pollutants...

Children absorb a greater proportion of many pollutants through their intestinal tract and lungs. For example, they absorb about half of the lead they swallow, whereas adults absorb only about one-tenth.

Today, children have chemical exposures from birth that their parents didn't have until they were adults. Because children are exposed to toxics at an earlier age than adults, they have more time to develop environmentally triggered diseases, with long term latency periods,
such as cancer.
